I was thinking about a review on R 15 . But , couldnt get a chance to keep a R15 for a reasonable period for writing review. And then i got a comment to my previous post on Yamaha R 15. Until i get a good review from some one, let it be here.
This comment was made by Vivek which i think is a neutral one.
Hello, I am a Tech Specialist in a MNC in Noida and a great bike lover, I am riding since the age of 9 and I am 29 today.
I have completed 4000 Kms on R15 and using it since a month.
I totally agree that when I first made up my mind to go for it, I thought it must be a something more powerful (when it comes to pickup).
But I would really say that its far more better than any other Indian Bike in the market.
Having used both Karizma and Pulsar .
And I will like to share my outlook;
1. I have travelled straight from Lucknow to Delhi having only two stays in between thats about 200 kms of non stop riding at a speed of 75-80 on avg. (coz of its Diasil cylinder and Forged piston, cilinder has 20% silicon which keeps it cooler than rest of the bykes.)
I dont think any other Indian Byke can do that, it will burn out and the clutch plates will cease.2. It has given me amileage of 45 km/lt on highways and 38-40 kms/lts in City.I n which I have operated it around to 135 km/hr at times.Which means Its best in its class.
3. It has an awesome grip on roads, its not important for a bike that it goes past 130-140 what is important its that how much safer it is to go to that speed. Toy can really feel safe at speeds of 120, the byke will not skid when applying brakes as that speed.
Some people say that it has narow tyres, they were specially made for R15, having soft rubber and different raddi, complete tubeless providing 3 times better grip that Pulsar and about 2 times better that Karizma in my view.
Before riding this I loved Karizma, coz it was better than Pulsar, but those two feel to be pieces of srap of primitive machines when comapred to R15.
Dont check the speed and pickup. Ride it above 120 km/hr you will forget about the price and comparisons.

Hi jerry, it indeed is a marvel that a 150cc bike reaches 140kmph, but at what cost? The torque it produces at the lower end is meager-it would be torture to ride it in traffic, and if you’re taking a pillion too, then may the force be with you! Lol! But then yamaha didn’t develop this bike to be used on road-it’s made for the track, where the engine never has to rev low.
So, if all you care abt is the top end (see below), and not how quickly you can reach it, then you know what to get.
Top speeds i have clocked:
Bike, indicated speed, GPS Reading
R15-144kmph-138.1kmph
P220-144kmph-137.9kmph
These figures are my all time best’s. The r15 is undoubtedly faster, but by the time both bikes reach their top speeds, the 220 will still be ahead, due to faster acceleration!
PS-bikes don’t dream of technology, people do! :-p
PS2-no comments on the looks

R15 is a bike with astounding technology advances, which 220 can just dream of - in current stage. Its liquid cooled, amazing prowess - to touch 140 kmph in speedo [actual 132-133] with just a 149.8 cc engine is nothing less than a marvel- This is technology. Yamaha engineers have achieved more tha what a bike with a 70more CC cant make.
This itself proves the advantage of R15. I have driven R1; R15 is its smaller [one more er] brother! The looks, fairings, even the footrests are of the same make! apart from looks, the bike give value for money for each rupee spend. The tyres is a let-down as per many, but its the best in class again, which the Yamaha engineers worked out with MRF to develpe the best one with grip and traction.
After its our likeliness - If we just need economy and is okay with smaller techie bikes, just have a 220 or ZMA; if we love technology and the spirits of a true performance bike, go for R15

er…typo in my previous post. “I’m pretty sure NONE of the 150+ cc bikes available today wud “burn out” SO quickly.”
cheers!

If you want to compare the R-15 with the P220, let me help you out since I own the latter, and have rode the former extensively:
Like you, even i was surprised at the low initial pick-up, but once the revs crossed 8k it was simply amazing!
1) 200 km IMHO is too short a distance to say whether a bike can handle the heat or not. I’m pretty sure any of the 150+ cc bikes available today wud “burn out” SO quickly.
I’ve done Kanyakumari to Bangalore on my 220 covering 670km in 14 hours straight. In daylight, i was averaging at over 105kmph on NH-7, and the bike just kept munching miles. Didn’t encounter any probs at the end of the ride except a numb rear lol!
I loved the sound of the fan kicking in on the R-15; sounds like it’s got a supercharger lol!
2) My bike returns a mileage that’s directly related to the speed i ride it at : the faster i ride, the more it gives! sounds crazy i know, but that’s the fact. Till now, it’s dropped below 40kmpl only once..
3) Hmmm…tyre grip…is simply mind blowing!!! I can do a stoppie on the R15 without even trying!
And braking is the best I’ve seen on an Indian bike. No matter the speed at which you brake, the R15 seems to just stick to the road. The only thing you can complain about is the physical size of the tyres, but trust me it’s only a psychological thing! You won’t get over this unless you ride the bike…

I haven’t tried riding R15 Yet. have to agree it looks great from front.
I own a Pulsar 220. I rode from Gurgaon to Amritsar that is around 550 Kms.
I braked only once after around 200 KMs straight and rode it at a speed of
around 100-125 KMPH. and I am so damm happy with it’s performance. I was
thinkin of getting a new r15, but I dont think its a good idea to spend another 30k
on a bike thats marginally faster than P220. R15 is awsome in corners,
but at the end i am not going to use it mush on a race track. Acc to my opinion, if we consider the pricing as well, P220 wins hands down.
